1. How to Protect your water system in cold weather?

When the outside temperatures hover around zero degrees, there is a possibility of water pipes in your home freezing, especially if they are contained in a crawl space or pass up through an outside wall of your home. For the next few days, consider the following precautions:
1. Open a water tap slightly, so that a very small, but steady, flow is maintained through the pipes, and
2. Open the doors underneath your bathroom vanity or kitchen sink so that warm room air will heat the pipes as well.

As an additional safety measure, ensure that you know the location of the water shut off valve for your home, usually situated near the water meter. A professional plumber or contractor can install heat tape around your exposed pipes to minimize the possibility of freezing as well.
If your pipes do freeze, the situation should be dealt with swiftly in order to prevent water damage to your home. Call United Water at 248-624-6421 if you need advice.

2. What are the deadlines for paying water and sewer bills?

Thirty days after issuance of the bill. The bills are sent out quarterly in January, April, July and October. For specific questions about your bill contact the City’s water and sewer contractor United Water at (248)624-6421.

3. What is the number to call concerning after-hours water issues, waterline breaks, or sewer backups?

(248)624-6421 which has a 24 hour operator that is able to dispatch a water/sewer employee.

4. How should I water my lawn to avoid wasting water?

Your lawn should be watered between 10pm and 3am to help keep our rates with Detroit Water low, and Michigan State University recommends .5-1.5 inches of water per week for a healthy lawn. You should adjust your sprinklers to try and comply with these recommendations.

7. How do you detect a leak in the water distribution piping system?

9. What are the different methods of payment for my water/sewer bill?

Water / Sewer bills may be paid:
a) At City Hall: Located at 49045 Pontiac Trail – Either at the Finance Department (7:15AM – 5:30PM / Monday through Thursday except Holidays) or in the drop box located inside the entrance of the Police Department.
b) On-line (Debit Card and Credit Card Payments). You may access the water/sewer payment option by clicking on the red On-line payments button on the left side of the City of Wixom’s homepage. Or you may log on to www.officialpayments.com for credit cards and eps.mvpbanking.com for direct debits. You will need your account number.
c) Lock Box. Simply mail your check and the UPPER portion of your statement to:

10. Why did my bill go up after my meter was replaced?

When meters get old they become less accurate and do not record all of the water used, the new meters are more accurate thus properly recording water use.
