1. What is GIS?

Geographic Information Systems (GIS) is a combination of applications that allows the creation, maintenance analysis, and display of geospatial data. Information referring to places and events relative to their location on the earth's surface is often defined as geographic or spatial data.

Fundamental to the design of GIS is the integration of geographic data with information about the geographic feature. Many types of information about our community are stored in distinct map layers. These layers contain point, line and polygon map features.

An incident of a crime or a permit location may be stored as a point. Roads, water mains, and rivers are stored as lines. Using GIS tools, we can create graphical displays of this data and perform spatial analysis. These "intelligent maps" provide information about a region such as where people live and work, where growth and development occur, locations of utilities and public facilities, locations of environmentally sensitive lands and much more.

2. How does GIS help me?

GIS appears in many aspects of today's technological world. When purchasing items at the store you may be asked for your zip code. This information is stored in a database and mapped to help determine things like distance of customer travel and the best location to build a new store. Planning a trip you may consult a search engine such as MapQuest or Google Maps for directions. All of these are GIS applications.

4. How can I get a map?

There are many ways to get maps of the City's website. Click on link below to access the current maps in PDF format. You will have to use Acrobat Reader/Acrobat Pro to open these files. If you can't find what you want you can contact the GIS Project Leader Joel Lenz of Riversedge at (248) 624-0141 and request a custom map. Maps are available GIS Standard Maps

5. What are ArcView, ArcEditor, and ArcInfo?

ArcView, ArcEditor, and ArcInfo are licensing levels for ArcGIS Desktop applications.

6. What are the basic differences between ArcView, ArcEditor, and ArcInfo?

ArcView provides data visualization, query, analysis, and integration capabilities along with the ability to create and edit simple geographic features. ArcEditor includes all the functionality of ArcView and adds a comprehensive set of tools to create, edit, and ensure the quality of your data. ArcInfo includes all the functionality of ArcEditor and adds advanced spatial analysis, data manipulation, and high-end cartography tools. Find out which product is right for you.

7. What are ArcMap, ArcCatalog, ArcScene, and ArcGlobe?

ArcMap, ArcCatalog, ArcScene, and ArcGlobe are ArcGIS Desktop application programs. ArcMap and ArcCatalog are the core applications delivered with all licensing levels of ArcGIS Desktop; ArcScene and ArcGlobe are part of the ArcGIS 3D Analyst extension.

CivicSight has been providing access to GIS Data for nearly 10 years. CivicSight began as a low-cost solution for municpal organizations to distrubute GIS information throughout the organization. Many of the same benefits CivicSight provided back in 1998 are still important today. 9. What functionality is available with ArcView?

ArcView is a complete GIS, suitable for users who will manage their own file-based data sources, use data sources from the Internet, or collaborate in enterprise workflows without the requirement to manage the enterprise data sources.
