DPW Department Snow Plowing

The Wixom Public Works Department strives to provide unmatched snow and ice control services and is aware of the seriousness of keeping roads drivable for all Wixom residents during the winter season. Because of the seriousness of this task, the City utilizes a snow removal policy designed to prioritize roadway clearing efforts, make efficient use of our limited staff and financial resources, all with the intent of maintaining safe and passable roadways.

Our first priority is major roadways and school routes. These streets are an interlocking road system, connecting police and fire stations, rescue squad units, and county roads located within our city limits. The second priority is selected “hot spots” such as hills and curves. The third priority is the remaining roads and streets, which include residential streets that carry a lower volume of traffic.

As a resident and homeowner you can aid our community during the winter months by keeping sidewalks clear of accumulated snow and ice. Clearing your sidewalks keeps you and your neighbors safer. When clearing your sidewalks and driveways, keep in mind it is a violation of city ordinance to shovel snow into public roadways; this could potentially cause vehicular accidents and or obstruct safe and free movement of automobiles.

DPW Snow RemovalAdditionally, please do not park in the street during snowfalls. Cars parked in roadways hinder the ability of the DPW to plow roads. Once a snow fall reaches 2 inches it becomes an automatic snow emergency and NO PARKING is allowed on City streets until the roads have been cleared. Please realize when the DPW plows, some snow is going to be left at the end of your driveway, or up against your mailbox. It is important that you clear your driveways and mailboxes. The DPW will not be able to clear your driveway or shovel out your mailbox. Living in Michigan comes with the reality that during the winter we will all be shoveling!

If you have questions or concerns regarding damage to a mailbox or yard due to our City plows you can contact the DPW at 248 624-0141. Rocks and decorative yard displays left in the City Right-of-Way will not be replaced.

Snow Damage Information
During the snow season there may be instances where snow removal equipment and efforts result in the inadvertent damage to lawns and mail boxes. Should this be the case, please contact the Department of Public Works at (248) 624-0141. Staff will subsequently inspect the damage and personally contact you to discuss repairs and/or replacement. Landscape repairs are typically scheduled for the spring whereas mail boxes will be repaired/replaced as needed as soon as possible. In cases where a new post is required, permanent repairs will need to wait until the frost leaves the ground and a new post set.

We regret any inconvenience you may experience and wish you a safe and healthy winter season.
