REPORTS TO: Fire Chief
QUALIFICATIONS:
Must be 18 years of age or older, High School Diploma or GED, Valid Michigan Driver’s License, live within 5 miles of the Wixom Fire Station, Michigan Firefighter I & II and Basic EMT are preferred, however, all individuals meeting the minimum qualifications as described above will receive required training. Paid-on-Call Firefighters provide coverage on nights and weekends.
DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
- Responds to emergency and non-emergency incidents; provides appropriate services as required including emergency rescue and fire suppression; performs search and rescue for trapped or injured persons; performs emergency medical and first aid services as needed; prepares reports regarding emergency incidents as assigned.
- Drives fire apparatus and/or operates fire apparatus on emergency calls or at incident scene.
- Operates numerous types of rescue, emergency and fire suppression equipment and apparatus as necessary; performs other technical tasks related to maintaining the apparatus, equipment, and facilities.
- Participates in cleaning and maintaining facilities, grounds, equipment and apparatus; ensures that appropriate conditions are maintained at department facilities; ensures that all equipment and apparatus are in a constant state of readiness for emergency calls.
- Participates in a variety of fire prevention operations, activities and programs including training.
- Responds to a variety of hazardous materials incidents; performs defensive or offensive activities which will be dependent upon levels of certification in accordance with state and federal regulations; maintains knowledge and training about hazardous materials.
- Studies street and occupancy locations in the City; studies building plans and fire prevention systems in buildings in the City.
- Assists with transportation of patients to medical care facilities; evaluates the condition of patients and assesses pertinent information about medical profile and injuries; determines treatment in accordance with EMT training; maintains contact with medical facility to prepare for patient arrival.
- Participates in a variety of activities requiring travel including off-site inspections; responds to incidents on an on-call basis and under emergency conditions.
- Gives tours of assigned facility, demonstrates fire equipment and apparatus, and participates in other educational programs for various groups and the general public pertaining to a variety of life safety topics.
- Operates and cleans rescue vehicle and related equipment; maintains supplies, materials and equipment aboard rescue vehicles; submits requisitions for additional materials and supplies as necessary.
- Prepares emergency medical incident reports regarding patient and incident information.
- Performs other related job duties and related job tasks as assigned.
CONDITIONAL EMPLOYMENT REQUIREMENT:
Employment offers for this position will be contingent upon passing a physical agility test (CPAT or equivalent). In addition, selected candidates must successfully complete a thorough background investigation, psychological exam and physical exam including drug screening.
