Each year, the Fire Department sponsors an Open House to end its annual celebration of Fire Prevention Week. For those unfamiliar with the history, Fire Prevention Week began in 1920 when President Woodrow Wilson proclaimed that the second week October of each year would be known as National Fire Prevention Week. His proclamation came from his and firefighters’ concerns that thousands of people were losing their lives in fires each year – about 15,000 in 1919.
In Wixom, the firefighters commemorate this national event by their distribution of fire prevention materials at schools and businesses and by their annual Fire Department Open House that focuses upon fire safety and prevention through demonstrations and events for children and adults. Activities include fire extinguisher demonstrations, children’s water-ball, vehicle extrication display and tours of the training tower and burn building.
